“Don’t tell me what I can’t do” Locke, Walkabout

Walkabout is one of the best episodes of season 1 maybe the entire series, the reveal is masterful and hits you right in the feels. The whole flashback is kind of hard watch, Locke is broken man inside and he constantly put down and told what he cannot do. It’s so well hidden that he is in a wheelchair that when he is told at the end he cannot go on the walkabout you think the guy is just being a dick, then the camera pans back and you see. After all that you have seen in this episode, THIS scene….. It’s so well done by Terry O’Quinn the pain and anger in his voice, face and eyes it is an incredible moment. He shouting that this is his destiny, this a theme that comes up again, maybe it is as he was destined to be on the island and he had his own walkbout of sorts while there by killing the boar. We then flash to him after the crash looking at his toe moving the look of confusion then happiness, his life has changed in that moment and we feel it all with him.

He may have been a bit of a mystery before this but this is where he shines. On the island he has finally found a place where he fits in and has the exceptance he has always wanted. He is a useful member of the group by being the hunter and we see later helping Charlie get off heroin. It’s nice to see. He also gets a visit from the smoke monster, he tells Jack that he has seen the centre of the island and it was beautiful. That conversation shows that he has a lot of faith in the island and that there is a reason they are there, even if they do not know it yet.

Jack is having a little crisis of his own. He is seeing his Dad walk around the island which he says is impossible, this we find out is becasue Christian is dead and Jack was bringing his body back from Australia when they crashed. He does not believe it is him he says to Locke it MUST be a hallucination, Locke says it probably is but what if it is not. Jack has a think about this and follows Christian to a source of water in the caves, not before he tries to kill Jack though (my only real annoyance with this episode).

Now this sets up man of science (Jack) vs the man of faith (Locke) this jouney through the series is always an interesting one. In his flash he is told he does not have what it takes, which in Christians eyes means if Jack fails it will haunt him. Now I don’t see this as being a bad thing and shows us how heartless his Dad is. Yes it creates a problem in Jack where by he cannot let things go and he will not give up on any plan he has even when it is not working. He is like a dog with a bone when it comes to moving to the caves, I wish when Kate asks him if he was checking her out that he just said yes, it would of been a fun light moment, they are clearly meant for each other they flirt constantly but neither of them seem to want to act on this.

Jin and Sun are shown to be so happy in Sun’s flashback and slowly it unravels and we see them get to where they are on the island. The diffrerence is heartbreaking, just want them to fall back in love again straight away. Working for her Father has fundamentally changed who Jin is and he has lost sight of what makes Sun happy. The island will give them the opportunity to find each other again away from her Father’s influence.

She has been hiding a secret from him, a few actually, but for now it’s that she can speak english and asks Michael to free Jin from the handcuffs even though Jin tried to kill him over his father in-law’s watch. Now I am not a massive fan of Michael but he is really good here showing forgiveness. She was also ready to leavve Jin but at the airport in Australia she could not do it. This is beginning of their reconciliation. When he gets water for her by trading fish in White rabbit , she says thank you this is so sweet he just says thats what husband’s do for their wive’s. It shows us that Jin is not completely lost he is in there somewhere.

Three really good episodes here expanding the LOST mythology and giving some really good charater moment’s. I don’t want bang on about the music being amazing from now on just assume it is unless otherwise stated, it is really good

“It’s been six days… and we’re all still waiting. Waiting for someone to come. Well, what if they don’t? We have to stop waiting. We need to start figuring things out. A woman died this morning just going for a swim, and he tried to save her, and now you’re about you crucify him? We can’t do *this*. Every man for himself is not gonna work. It’s time to start organizing. We need to figure out how we’re gonna *survive* here. Now I found water… fresh water up in the valley. I’ll take a group in at first light. If you don’t wanna come, then find another way to contribute! Last week most of us were strangers. But we’re all here now, and God knows how long we’re gonna be here. But if we can’t, live together… we’re gonna die alone.” Jack to the group, White rabbit
